Extra Curricular Activities

Athletic Director / Malik Lee

Hi!  My name is Amber Wilkinson!

My family and I are excited to be new members of the MCDS community.  We moved from LaGrange, Ga last summer where I served as the director of FPC Montessori School.  We immediately fell in love with the atmosphere here at MCDS.  Our children, Levi and Mirinda, love the downtown activities and we can often be seen biking to and from school.

Sports and outdoor activities have been a part of my life since high school and throughout college.  I love being outdoors, participating in triathlons, going on trail runs, and mountain biking through Fort Yargo.  I am looking forward the school's annual 5K and can't wait to share my love of sports with our students.

I am thrilled to be able to incorporate my knowledge as a director with my love of sports and to help grow our student athletics, inspire success through teamwork, and create a positive mindset.

4H Project S.A.F.E.

Target sports are available through the Walton County 4H program. Their S.A.F.E. project (shooting, awarenes, fun and education) uses target sports to teach valuable life skills, promote a sense of belonging among youth and increase concentration skills. Participants learn how to use firearms and archery equipment both safely and responsibly.

Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl

Who Was Helen Ruffin?

Helen Ruffin was a media specialist in Dekalb county, Georgia. In order to encourage her students to read more, she created a competition game based on the Georgia Children's Book Award Nominees. This is how the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl came to be. The HRRB is a unique reading competition. In Georgia, the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl is open to students in grades 4-12.

How Does the Reading Bowl Work at MCDS?

1) The reading bowl is opened to all 4th through 8th-grade students who like to read and compete.

2) Two teams will be created.  One team will be for 4th and 5th-grade students and the other team will be for middle-grade students.

3) Students are expected to read as many of the 10 books assigned for each level.

4) Students meet once a week to discuss the books and to have friendly competitions using our buzzers for practice.

5) District-wide (WCSD) competition is held in January on a Saturday morning. The top two teams then go to regionals to compete with schools across the region. This is held two weeks after the district competition. The top two winners at regionals then move on to the state competition.
